Book of Trees Project

You will need:

  • Selection of leaves that you have collected on walks
  • Pens or crayons
  • Paper
  • Stapler
  • Glue

Instructions:

  1. Create a mini book out of your paper either by stapling A4 sheets together or folding them in half to make an A5 sized book with staples down the centrefold.
  2. Have your child draw round the shape of each different leaf within the top half of a left hand page and then stick the leaf on.  On the bottom half of that page, ask them to draw the tree that the leaf belongs to.
  3. Wikipedia.org is a good place to find facts about trees, have older kids look up different tree types.
  4. On the right hand page, write different facts about that tree.  So, for example, “Beech tree leaves turn copper in autumn”.  “They are often used to make hedges”, etc.
  5. Encourage your child to be creative with the front cover of the book, a title in different greens, leaves stuck onto a tree drawn on, etc.
  6. Don't forget to take your Tree Book out with you next time you go for a walk in the woods, so you can use it to spot different trees
